John Held John Held, Jr., was born Jan. 10, 1889 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He died March 2, 1958 in Belmar, N.J.,

He was a famous American cartoonist. At 15, he sold his first drawing to Life magazine. At 16, he was drawing sports and political cartoons for the Salt Lake Tribune. At 19, he sold his first cartoon to a national magazine. After that, he worked for a New York City newspaper in the Art department.

There are 3 known "Dapper Dan" doorstops, two of which are made by the Judd Company which he may have contibuted. The third Dapper Dan was for sure designed by John Held because it has his name on it (on the front base). It is believed he designed this for Hubley.

John Held's work epitomized the flapper girls of the Roaring 1920s' so much that another doorstop is attributed to be of his design: "Flapper in a Fur Coat" made by , again, the Judd Company.
