Note 1:
The Story of Little Black Sambo was written by Helen Bannerman, and first published in October 1899. Sambo, an Indian boy, encounters four hungry tigers. He surrenders his colourful new clothes, shoes, and umbrella so they will not eat him. Each tiger thinks he is better dressed than the others. They are so vain that they chase each other around a tree until they are reduced to a pool of melted butter. Sambo recovers his clothes and his mother makes pancakes using the the butter.
