the NATIONAL FOUNDRY
WHITMAN, MA
(about 25 miles South of Boston)
1880 -

National Foundry of Whitman, Massachusetts, was a contemporary of Hubley. They started production between 1880-1885, just before Hubley started in 1894. The foundry made cap pistols in bronze and later in cast iron, along with andirons, candlesticks, bookends & Doorstops They made mostly bronze and later their cast iron doorstops became a large part of their business. The doorstops were sold as "Un-Painted" Grey Iron Castings or electroplated with brass, copper, or nickel. Their catalog gave specicfic directions to follow for painting. Since everyone painted their own, one can see why there are so many paint variations. They also sold their Doorstops painted which is why some of their doorstops always looked the same. Today, the company is called Whitman Foundry and produces castings used for machinery parts.
